How Kenmore Range, Stove, Oven Works
Kenmore combination ranges have 2 components. They have the surface burners and an oven. To understand how combination appliances work, please read expert advice from our specialists for both electric and gas options.
Control Panel
There are several options for Kenmore range and stove combinations. Different control panels will be slightly different but most will still have some of the similar components:
- The t thermostat regulates the temperature of the stove by working in conjunction with a long copper tube. This long copper tube relays the information back to the thermostat by either heating or cooling. There is also another type of thermostat: an electronic or mechanical model. This model has a probe attached to a small circuit board behind the oven knob. When the signals are received from the probe to the knob, this thermostat knows that it needs to adjust the temperature of the oven.
- Ovens have two kinds of clocks: a mechanical and an electronic type. There are, usually, 3 dials on a mechanical clock: start dial, stop dial, and the clock dial. Start and stop dials are used for timed cooking and for self-cleaning selections. The electronic clocks need to be replaced if they stop working as they are usually not fixable.
- Some ranges have electronic keypads. These keypads allow for setting the oven, broiler, timed bake, and self-cleaning times and temperatures. The electronic keypads need to be replaced when they fail, as they cannot be repaired.
- The s elector switch for bake/broil/timed bake, etc. Every electric and gas range has at least one control switch for the oven or the broiler. For some units this is the same switch as the thermostat while for others it is a separate one. If separate, it operates in conjunction with the thermostat. One sets the thermostat to the cooking temperature desired and then sets the selector switch to allow Bake, Broil, Timed Bake, etc.
- The light switch is usually located in the door frame of the oven. Some units have a light above the stove that is operated by a switch located in the control panel.
- The surface burner switches operate the same as regular dimmer switches. They allow adjustment of temperature settings by regulating the amount of electricity flowing from the switch to the burner.
- Self-cleaning buttons/switches. Ovens frequently have other related devices in addition to the clock controls for the self-cleaning feature. Often, they have a door lock button or a separate switch to toggle between self-clean and normal bake.
- Convection ovens allow even cooking of food by using a fan to circulate air and provide even temperatures throughout. One can enable or disable the convection cooking option by using a switch on the control panel.
Cooktop
- Electric stoves frequently have coils on top for the cook top. A wire inside the coils heats up when the electricity is applied and this action causes the coils to glow. Burners called "euro burners" do not glow, although they get just as hot as their counterparts. Euro burners are smooth and solid, and 6 - 8 inches in diameter. They have no moving parts and they have an internal coil in their center. "Smooth top" burners work the same way as the coil type but they are concealed under the surface.
- Gas range top burners use a similar system of gas delivery. There is a control knob for each burner and each one is attached to a small valve that is mounted to the main gas line. When the knob is turned on by the user, the gas flows through the valve into a "venturi" tube. This tube creates the proper mix for combustion by combining the gas with air. The standing pilot light or the igniter lights this mixture when it flows into the burner. , The size of the flame is regulated by adjusting the burner control knob. This restricts the amount of gas flowing through the valve as well.
Area Beneath the Cooktop
- Many electric cook tops with coil burners allow the entire cooktop to be raised when it needs to be cleaned or serviced. Model number and serial number tags are usually located beneath the cooktop.
- Many gas cook tops that have non-sealed gas burners allow the the cooktop to be raised when they need to be cleaned and serviced. The individual burner gas valves and ignition components may be located there as well. Model number and serial number tags are usually found here as well.
Area Behind the Broiler Drawer
On Gas ranges, he safety valve, spark igniter, fuse, and other components are often located behind the broiler drawer.
Back of the Unit
Much of the wiring for both electric and gas ovens is located in the back of the appliance. The steel panels that cover the wiring are placed there to protect the user from danger and the wiring from damage. Other components, such as relays, self-cleaning switches, transformers, and terminal blocks, are located behind the protective back panels as well.
Maintenance Tips for Kenmore Range, Stove, Oven
- Most control panels for ranges, stoves or ovens are made of glass and/or painted metal. It is advisable that non-abrasive cleaners be used on these surfaces.
Note: It is better not to spray cleaners directly onto the control panel but to place some cleaner on a soft, damp rag, and then wipe the surface.
- It is very important that cook-tops made of porcelain are cleaned with non-abrasive cleansers. RepairClinic.com provides all the cleansers and accessories you need for all your cooking appliances.
- Burner drip pans or bowls need to be replaced every couple of years. They are located beneath the grates on a gas range and beneath the heating element on an electric stove. It is usually very difficult to clean the drip pans completely once they are stained or burnt. Dirty and burnt drip pans can frequently affect the stove's cooking efficiency.
- Knob cleaning and care is also important. It is safe to clean the knobs with a a bit of dish detergent and a damp rag. If the numbers or lettering have worn away, the knobs can be replaced.
- Although Light bulbs are easy to replace, one may need to remove the glass covering or dome to reach it. Most interior ovens use a universal 40 watt appliance bulb.
- For the self-cleaning feature on your oven, it is best to consult your owner's manual for instructions on how to use it. The self-cleaning feature works by heating the interior of the oven to a temperature so very hot that it incinerates the residue of anything left in the oven. It is mostly not a good idea to clean the interior of a self-cleaning oven with a spray cleaner, but to be certain, one should refer to the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer. in order to clean a non-self-cleaning oven, use one of the many oven cleaners that are available at various stores or at RepairClinic.com which has a wide selection.
- Burner Elements as well as the heating elements inside of them will eventually burn out. When this occurs, one sometimes sees the coil burns, blisters and bubbles. Once the heating element burns out, one has to replace it. Heating elements can not be repaired. It is advisable to change the infinite switch that controls the burners at the same time one changes the burner elements. You can find all replacement parts for your oven, stove or range at RepairClinic.com.
